This is ONE of those books, you know what I mean.

It is one those books that you pick-up, read the back cover and KNOW that YOU KNOW that this book has the power to speak profoundly to the core of your being.

The Power of a single prayer to change the course of history!!

I read the first 4 chapters several times before I could complete the book. There was so much truth in those first chapters that I needed to read over and over to let my heart and mind soak it in.

Mark Batterson begins the book by sharing The Legend of the Circle Maker. His name is Honi. He lived in the first century BC. A devastating drought threatened to destroy a generation. Miracles were such a distant memory to the people that they seemed like make believe. Even if the people could no longer hear God, Honi believed that God could still hear them. He so desperately believed that God could hear them, that he made a choice one day to draw a circle in the dry ground and kneel in that circle and pray to God to send rain. Not just any rain - rain that would soak them to the core of their beings - not only to bring the rain that they needed, but also bring them the hope that had left them long ago.

I love how Mark describes Honi's posture of prayer:

"It wasn't just the volume of his voice, it was the authority of his tone. Not a hint of doubt. This prayer didn't originate in the vocal chords. Like water from an artesian well, the words flowed from the depth of his soul. His prayer was resolute yet humble, confident yet meek, expectant yet unassuming."

This kind of prayer resonates in my heart!! I want to be like this eccentric sage Honi.

Some quotes from the book:

- God is still looking for circle makers.

- Bold prayers honor God, and God honors bold prayers.

- Circle Makers have a sanctified stubborn streak. (As I write this, I remember when I was a teenager my dad telling me that he thought God would use my persistence and stubbornness for good. But at the time I was driving him crazy)

- Circle Makers are history makers.

- Sometimes faith seems like a denial of reality.

- Faith is the willingness to look foolish.

- In order to experience a miracle, you have to take a risk. And one of the most difficult types of risk to take is risking your reputation. You cannot build God's reputation if you aren't willing to risk yours. (thank goodness Noah was willing to risk his reputation)

- Circle Makers are risk takers.

I could go on an on. Do you believe that the power of a single prayer can change the course of history? I do! Asking others to join in praying with you for specific things on your heart is creating a double circle around the things that God has put on your heart. God created us to need and support each other. One of the best ways that we can do that is in prayer.

- We love a good night's sleep, but sleepless nights are what define our lives. If you're going to bring kings to their knees or shut the mouths of lions, sometimes you need to pull an all-nighter.

Over the last year in Orphan Ministry we have pulled a few all-nighters in prayer. The situation that God led us to in Haiti brought us to our knees. We were desperate for God's mighty right hand to move on this kids behalf. We were totally dependent on Him to part the Red Sea that would see these kids set free from the situation that they were in.

God's mighty right hand did move and the Red Sea opened for these kids to be brought out of the horrible situation they were in - Thank you Lord!!!

While we celebrate and rejoice in what God has done, we rest and wait on Him to lead us according to His will. I don't think we are done praying circles around impossible situations.

Nothing is impossible with God. The things that God has laid on your heart may seem like a distant dream - something totally impossible unless God intervenes.

Don't give up - Be persistent - Press in to God in prayer even when you can't see or feel anything happening. :)

The 2012 Run for Orphans exists to bring communities and churches together to advocate for the needs of orphans in our community and around the world.

Northern Colorado Christian Alliance for Orphans is sponsoring this event. NCCAFO is a collaborative group of adoption agencies, orphan ministries, county agencies and church ministries uniting to advocate for children in need.

Each organization represented will be raising funds for their specific project or need.

There are many ways that you can be involved:

Breakfast Bags filled for Homeless Gear :)

U Count Partnered with Homeless Gear to advocate for the need of filled Breakfast Bags. These bags were filled with 3 food items and 2 drinks. Their goal was to fill 1,000 bags. Tonight they had their final packing event and the total bags filled after tonight was 2,735!!!!! Thank you Timberline Church for supporting this effort in such a significant way. :)

Guarding Beauty that lives here still

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the story of Naomi and Ruth. Ruth's love and commitment to Naomi is clearly stated in:

Ruth 1:16

Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

As an adoptive mom, I see the parallels of Ruth and Naomi's story being very similar to the struggles and emotions that we go through as an adoptive parent.

This song by Nicole Nordeman and Amy Grant titled: "I'm with you" tells the story beautifully.

As you listen to this song, I think you will see that you and your foster/adoptive child are actually on the same side. A line in this songs says: "falling on your hands and knees, trying to gather up my dreams trying to hold onto to anything". While at times it feels like we are opposing each other, we are each trying desperately in our own way to keep our hopes and dreams (individually and collectively) from slipping away.

While ours kids display behaviors and emotions that stem from their past, our hearts grieve for what they have experienced and felt.

It is clear in God's Word that He is near the brokenhearted.

Psalms 34:18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

This is promise that we can stand on!! God is near us and our children as we walk through this valley of healing. :)

Deadline to double your gift fast approaching

FHF was given a $30,000 match gift in December and since then, our partners have given $26,696. We only have $3,304 more to go to reach our $30K goal and make the most of this generous match gift.

The deadline to finish the match is January 31 in order to launch the 2012 Reach More Families Advance. When you commit to this essential project, here’s what you’ll help accomplish:

Identify foster/adoptive families with the greatest needs.
Invite families to a special day where they’ll learn how valued they are and how to network with other families.
Where they’ll be safe to ask questions
Where they’ll hear practical ways to nurture their marriage & care for children with prior abuse and neglect

Because you care, five special days will be held where foster/adoptive parents will learn they’re not alone, and that success for wounded children is far closer than they know today.

The investment for a one-day Reach More Families event is $5,000 (includes 100 meals, specialized children’s program, handouts for parents, ABC's of Character book & "Super Heroes Academy" t-shirt for all of the kids).

FHF Launches Scholarship Program

A new ministry is launched!

In January, 2011, FHF launched a mental health scholarship program. Recognizing that many families do not have the resources to provide the kind of intervention that children with acute emotional trauma require, FHF worked to establish a program to address this gap.

In keeping with the vision to "equip communities to rally around the heroes who are foster and adoptive families," FHF is always looking for strategic partnerships that serve families effectively in the areas where they are hurting the most.

2011 FHF Mental Health Scholarship Recipient:

"Our 15 year old daughter has been living at a Therapeutic Group Home for almost 8 months and the emotional struggle of that has taken some getting used to. Being in full-time, support-based ministry, we live on a modest income and found it equally challenging to cover the expenses related to our daughter's "out of home care". Receiving the scholarship from FHF has been a huge blessing to us during this time. Several of our ministry supporters have wanted to help by giving to the scholarship fund which has relieved a good deal of the burden of trying to pay for our daughter's care out of our normal income. We are very grateful for the servant-hearted help and encouragement we have received from the staff and volunteers of FHF!" Shannon and Susan

This effort has grown into it's own partnering non-profit organization called, Adoptive Families Coalition.

U Count Partnering with Homeless Gear

Timberline Church and U COUNT Campaign has partnered with Homeless Gear to provide breakfast snack bags to the overnight shelter in Fort Collins.

Currently there are not enough permanent beds in the two homeless night shelters to provide shelter to everyone that wants it. People who utilize the emergency overflow night shelter do not receive a warm meal in the morning as they do at the permanent shelters.

We have adopted the month of February and plan to collect, assemble and deliver 1,000 bags. We are collecting items now thru the end of January & will begin distributing bags in February.

YOU CAN HELP IN ONE OF 4 WAYS
· Collect and provide component parts of each bag
· Provide completed breakfast bags (ready to distribute)
· Provide cash for us to purchase components for the bags
(checks can be made out to Timberline Church w/Breakfast Bags in the memo line) · . Provide labor to assemble bags

Components of Breakfast Sacks Must Be:
· Able to be easily opened without mechanical devise
· Able to be eaten straight away or by adding hot water
· Non perishable or shelf life longer than 6 months
· Commercially produced and packaged
· In individual sized containers

Typical Breakfast Sack Components (these are just ideas):
Lunch sized paper bag or grocery bag, plastic spoons and forks, napkin

Granola Bars, Raisins, Oatmeal or other Instant Hot Cereal Juice Box, Cereal Snack Boxes & Powdered Milk Fruit Roll Ups or Fruit Snacks, Peanut Butter Crackers Jerky, Trail Mix, Nuts, Fruit Cups, Pudding Cups Hot Chocolate Packets (just add water), Instant Soups, Instant Mac and Cheese

We suggest the following for each bag: · 3 food items – these do not need to be breakfast items. · 2 drink items – one ready to drink and one that hot water can be added (hot chocolate, tea, coffee etc.)

You made an impact in the lives of children in Haiti in 2011

Dear Friends - As we enter 2012 our mind's and heart's are replaying and processing all that transpired in Orphan Ministry in 2011.

You played a significant role in the miracle that happened in Haiti this past year. You were part of a team that went to serve, you were a sponsor of one of the children at Son of God, you were faithful to cover the kids and our teams in prayer (calling out the kids name in prayer - powerful indeed!). Each one of these roles were equally significant!

The girls continue to transition beautifully into their new home at Life is Wealth. They are all healthy - Praise God!! They attend school every day - they are part of the church family right there on campus - they have a safe place to sleep and two meals a day. A MIRACLE!!

The boys are still at the boys home in Carrefour. While this isn't the best situation, they are healthy, they attend school, they have friends and 2-3 meals a day. They know deep in their hearts the truth of God's word and the truth of the songs that many of our teams taught them. I am sure that while they may not be able to sing them out loud at the boys home, when they lay down to sleep those songs comfort them. God is at work, even through things unseen.

Throughout the last year we have partnered with several organizations in the US advocating for the needs of these kids. We began to sense God leading us to ask one of these organizations to take over the sponsorship of all of the girls at Life is Wealth Orphanage. This really resonated with Hearts United for Haiti. Their board recently met and feel God is leading them to be the direct contact with the directors at Life is Wealth and facilitate the sponsorship of all of the girls. Their director, Crystal Funk has been a significant part of helping the girls transition at Life is Wealth. Crystal and her daughter Emily stayed at the orphanage with the girls for several weeks. During this time they built a trusting relationship with the directors. That relationship will have an impact on the future of each of these girls. Please contact Crystal directly to let her know you would like to continue to sponsor the girl that you have been sponsoring or that you would like to begin sponsoring one of them. We will still be involved with the girls lives at Life is Wealth. Our teams will be able to visit them while we are in Haiti. We just will not be part of the daily decisions and sponsorship component.

Prayer Points heading into 2012:

- Crystal and her team are able to receive 100% sponsorship of all the girls at Life is Wealth.

- That the boys and girls grow in faith, confidence and knowledge of God's love for them and for their country. God LOVES Haiti and cares deeply about the people there.

- Spiritual mountains would continue to be moved in Haiti in such a way that they would see sweet revival sweep through their county.

- The Holy Spirit would relentlessly pursue and protect those who can effect change in Haiti.

Through this last year - there is one thing that speaks boldly to us. Never Once did we walk alone!! God was faithful at every turn to give us just what we needed in knowledge, in strength, in endurance, in perserverance and in unity as the body of Christ.

The above song by Matt Redman speaks to the journey that we have been on for the last year. As you listen to it, let the words sink into your heart at the depth of God's hand in ours over the last year. With joy our hearts can say - Never Once did we walk alone!!!

IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR

On Christmas Eve in 1849, Dr. Edmund Sears shared a poem that he wrote titled "It came upon a midnight clear" with his congregation.
The poem was written out of time spent with God. Dr. Sears was desperately seeking words inspired by God that would ignite a fire in their hearts to serve the least of these in their community. His personal passion to reach the least of these caused him to spend much time in the slums sharing the unconditional and saving love of Jesus Christ.
A poem penned out of a desperate cry to God has become a song that is dear to our hearts in the truth that the words convey:

Peace on Earth, good will to men from Heaven's Gracious King

Luke 2:9-14

And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. And the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which shall be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you; you will find a baby wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger. And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased."

May the truth of God's Word resonate in our hearts. May we live our lives in such a way that all men are drawn into a saving knowledge and relationship with Jesus Christ. May we be bold to speak these words of truth.

This Christmas there are children who don't know what it is like to experience the love of a family.

The very depth of this need can be overwhelming if we don't focus on the "one thing" that God is calling us to do to speak out on their behalf. I want to encourage you to ask God what is the "one thing" that you can do to make a difference in the life of a child who needs someone to advocate for them.

You could be that someone that God uses to change the life of a child. I can hear the struggle going on in your heart and mind as you read those words.

Those words that say:
"What? Who am I that I could have an impact in someone's life?"
"No way, I barely have time to do the things that I do."

I can hear those words, because I have heard those same words echo in my heart and mind as God has put a challenge before me. I know that God is faithful and God will equip you in the task that He puts before you. :)

James 1:22 But don't just listen to God's Word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourself.

I recently received a copy of Wait No More written by Kelly and John Rosati compliments of Focus on the Family. Kelly Rosati is the Vice President of Community Outreach at Focus on the Family.

Before moving to Colorado the Rosati family lived in Hawaii where God opened their hearts to foster care and adoption. Their foster to adoption journey was not easy. Wait No More is an honest reflection of the challenges that they faced. If you are a foster/adoptive parent you will see your thoughts and feelings reflected in their story. You will see yourself reflected because no matter who you are, if God calls you to journey with Him in obedience in this thing called foster care and/or adoption we all will face the same challenges personally and spiritually.

What comes shining through is God's faithfulness to sustain and lead us on this journey. God sustains us through the truth of His word, the faithfulness of friends who commit to be present with us and to cover us in prayer. A couple excerpts from Wait No More:

I'll never forget when the pastor described to me that going through the adoption process was like "pouring Miracle-Gro on your sin." I laughed out loud. It's so true. So much of this process is about God changing and growing us - the parents - to be more like Christ. It's painful sometimes, but the heart of the Christian Life is to be transformed and become more like Christ.

If every Christian family in the United States would simply commit to pray and ask God if He wants to use them to bless a child without a family, well, we'd change the world. If we can get the church to think about adoption not in the terms of the desires of adults but in terms of the needs of children, I think we'd see on a much grander scale how God sets the lonely in families.

FHF - Surviving and Thriving Healthy Families Event

Finally Home Foundation launched in Colorado this past weekend. 23 families were supported and encouraged in their journey of foster care and adoption. There is nothing like sitting across the table from someone who can relate to your every day struggles in parenting children who have been hurt. The relief was evident in the shared stories, laughter and a few tears.

61 kids were cared for by our amazing volunteers who dedicated their time to "Make their Day".

The statements below are powerful!!! These were given by parents who attended the event this past weekend.

"It was great just to be able to talk with other parents with kids with problems just to know you're not alone!"

The topic found most beneficial was:
* The need to focus on our marriage.

* The practice on listening to our our spouse.

* The adult relationship piece because the couple has to be the strongest link in the family for the kids to be healthy.

U Count - Dedication of Project Rescue Home of Hope Center

From the moment you walked through the gate, the air was filled with giggles, laughter, joy and excitement. After four years of fundraising efforts, the day finally arrived for the opening of the Project Rescue Home of Hope Center and Sarah Elizabeth Girl's Home.

The center is surrounded by a lush tropical landscape. Flowers, palm trees and shrubs abound, giving it an oasis type feel. Each building has four apartments, each apartment has four spacious bedrooms, and each bedroom will house four-giving capacity for 64 women and 64 girls. All apartments have their own bathrooms and balconies for drying clothes. Solar panels and an elaborate filter system to recycle rainwater help to make the facility energy efficient.

During the program, there were few dry eyes as former victims of sexual exploitation, ages 3 and above, danced in joy, praise and freedom. As bicycles were presented amidst shrieks of joy, I was overwhelmed with the sense that, at this beautiful place, children whose harsh realities in the brothels had deprived them of a childhood, now have the opportunity to be a child once more.

To Timberline Church and all who gave to this wonderful cause - thank you. Through the opportunities now available, you have given these women and girls priceless treasures - safety, identity, dignity and self-respect.

Meet this wonderful sibling group! There is Delfino, who is the big brother; Serenity, the middle child; and Jacob, the youngest. Delfino has tons of energy. He has made a lot of progress since coming into care. Playing with other kids and trusting adults are two things he has been learning. Talkative and curious, Delfino needs reinforcement from parental figures and would be very happy to have two parents who love him. This little guy loves to eat spicy foods. Serenityis also progressing well. She can be very charming and follows directions with ease. Active and talkative, this lass loves her baby dolls and giving hugs. Jacob, youngest of the group, is an appealing, active child. He is happy being held and wants plenty of attention. Jacob needs patient and structured parents who can help him reach his potential. He is a very curious and strong-willed toddler.

Thankful for where God has led us this year!!

I am Thankful!!!

God has allowed Welcome Child and Timberline Church to be a part of something we could never imagine. In fact it is not something we would have went looking for. When we met with Children's Hopechest, we asked to be partnered with a pastor on the ground in Haiti that was ministering to orphans.

Our intent was to come alongside what God was calling him and his community to do in Haiti. As we began to take teams to this orphanage on a regular basis we began to notice inconsistencies in the food that we were having delivered, the items that were donated disappeared, we began to see signs of abuse and the children began opening up to us and other organizations that were at the orphanage frequently. We began documenting these things, not realizing that God was going to use this documentation to set these kids free from the situation that they were in.

The spiritual warfare that we have experienced personally and as a team has been unlike anything any of us has ever experienced. While we didn't go looking to be partnered with an orphanage such as this, we are so thankful that God led us there. We have learned more about God's heart for justice - we have learned more about God's power and authority - we have learned that the power of prayer is POWERFUL INDEED!!! Not for just those that were directly involved, but to call others to join in the battle through prayer and fasting.

We have seen multiple miracles and mountains moved in the last few months:

- organizations working diligently together to be one voice for these children.

- meetings that we were told would never happen:

* with judges and magistrates

* direct contact with President and First Lady Martelly

- favor for our teams as they took each step in obedience here in the US and in Haiti

- closing of Son of God Orphanage

- new person placed in position at the head of IBESR

- our teams connecting with these kids in their new homes.

One of the most precious miracles is the extention of Katia's story. After we shared with the panel of organizations about Katia's serious risk of dying in the care of those at Son of God Orphanage, she disappeared the next day (see post on November 3). We were heart broken. After a diligent search by authorities in Haiti we were told to presume that Katia had died. It was devestating to all who had heard Katia's story. Her life made God's word come alive in people's hearts. Their hearts rose in justice to advocate for children who are at risk like Katia.

Two weeks ago we heard that Katia and another missing little girl from Son of God had been found and brought into care. They are both at the girls home in Port au Prince with all of the other girls from Son of God. I cannot even describe how precious it was to me to pick up and love on this little girl that I thought had died and had mourned for.

She is happy - she has gained weight - she is smiling - she is laughing and I heard her talk for the first time. She has always been so sick that I have never heard her say anything. I saw her taking care of the little ones. Katia's life is a MIRACLE! Not only did God sustain her through the time that she was missing and on her own - she flourished. Is it possible that God was with her the whole time and that his angels were loving and feeding her? I believe it is!!!

You can tell by the pictures below that Katia is doing exceedingly well. When Tiffany and I were in Haiti a few weeks ago, Tiffany taught the kids how to sign I love you and touch your signed fingers together. After scooping Katia up in my arms I signed "I love you" to her and her face lite up in rememberence. She quickly signed I love you and reached her signed hand to touch mine.

Dear God - Thank you for allowing us to share in this amazing journey for these children. We are grateful that you have allowed our heart to feel a portion of your heart's cry for children just like Katia. You oh God - cry out for justice and mercy in such a powerful way that you call us to be your hands and feet here on this earth. We love you Lord and are thankful that you led us to advocate for these children. In your precious name we pray - Amen.

What Can I Do?

Many of you have asked, "what can I do?".

These kids have been through so much. We saw the emotional and physical impact this situation has had on all of these kids.

What if we could raise enough money to get every single one of those kids their own bed, much needed medical care, counseling, and a new outfit? What if we could get them all school uniforms, school supplies, pay their school fees so they could feel more connected to their community?

With your help - we can!!

We have started a fund to do this very thing. It is called Katia's House. Tax deductible donations will provide these things for the kids.

Our long term goal is to open a safe house in honor of Katia. Katia's House will be a home where we can provide a safe home for children in Haiti who are rescued from crisis situations like this one.

- $90 will pay school fees for a student to go to school for a year

"I Love You" - Katia's Story

The below stories were written on October 13, 2011 after Tiffany and I went to Haiti to present documents to a panel of organizations stating the need for IMMEDIATE intervention in the lives of the children living at Son of God Orphanage.

We just returned from another quick trip to the orphanage in Haiti last night. We arrived at the orphanage late Monday morning. It was obvious there were many sick kids (nothing new there). We were given permission by the directors to take some of the kids down the street to a medical clinic to have them checked out. We grabbed as many kids as we could carry and the ones that looked most desperate. We knew we needed to look for a little girl that is 5 years old and had been taken to the clinic just one month ago by one of our teams. Let me give you a little history on her story............................................

A precious 5 year girl, was in the worst condition they had ever seen. A couple of months ago she had mumps from head to toe, a month later she was in a body cast that covered her from her waist to her feet. When they found her last month she had an extremely high fever and like all of the other children – horrible skin conditions. She had lost most of her weight and she couldn’t even lift her head. After pleading with the "caretakers" of the orphanage they released her to let them take her to a local medical clinic.

The doctor at the clinic examined her and determined that she had infections that were destroying her, she was nearing death. He told them that if she doesn’t get proper care right away she will die of infections and malnutrition. He gave them a prescription and orders to give her a high protein drink and medicine 3 times a day for the next 2 weeks.

They were able to administer the medication for a few days, but they had to leave to come back to the United States. They left the medication with the "caretakers" of the orphanage and instructions, with hope but doubt that they would take care of her properly.

So it was very important for us to find her and get her checked again. We quickly found her and took her with us. While we waited in the waiting room for the Doctor, this little girl was silent and sat with her head down. Earlier before going to the clinic we had taught the kids that holding up your thumb, pointer finger and pinkie all at the same time meant, I love you! So as we were waiting, the other children with us were showing us with their little fingers and telling us in their broken English with their sweet little voices " I love you"

It was her turn to see the Doctor. I sat her in a chair and knelt down in front of her while the doctor started to take her temp and check her over. She sat still with her head down. I slowly reached out my hands for her to hold and she slowly grabbed both of my hands. At that moment she lifted her head and starred into my eyes (full of tears of course). The Doctor proceeded to tell me, she is not well......... he is very scared for her........ She needed to eat and she needed to be on a nutritional program. He wrote me a referral to send her to a place he knows of and asked me to try and get the directors at the orphanage to allow me to take her there. As I carried her out of the room, she put her three little fingers up and in the softest voice said "I love you". At that moment all the strength I had to keep it together was gone. I told her I loved her too and kissed her on the cheek. I knew the directors would not allow us to take her to the clinic. My options were limited...... Do I sneak her out and take her anyway? That is what I wanted to do but I knew the trouble I would get into for doing that.

I love you............... Had she ever heard those words before? Did she truly know what it meant to be loved? I pray that she knows we love her and we will continue to fight for her and all the kids at that orphanage!

As of today there are still no leads on what has happened with Katia. We are grieving the possibility that something happened to her. We shared her story in our meeting on Tuesday and told all of the organizations present that, "Katia is dying in their care".

I have never seen or held someone whose life was so fragile and vulnerable. When the doctor at the clinic began to examine her, Tiffany was standing in front of her whispering words of love and encouragement and I was holding little Guerlande who would not let me out of her sight. I set Guerlande down on the bed beside Katia and got my camera out so that I could take pictures of the doctor examining Katia.

It is hard to describe the feeling of respect for life that filled the room at that moment. It was a moment of quiet awe of being in the presence of something so close to heaven. I think we all felt the presence of the Comforter right there in that room. While I positioned my camera to take a picture - a feeling of Katia's life being so fragile that it would be disrespectful washed over me and I couldn't take a picture.

Dear Sweet Katia - your gentle spirit will never be forgotten. We will keep fighting to find out where you are and fighting for the release of your friends who are at Son of God. Your pain has changed us forever. You are deeply loved.

It is hard to believe that almost one month has went by since this happened. God used that visit as a culmination of many visits and inquiries to open doors for the children to be removed from Son of God Orphanage. There is still much work to be done. We trust and commit the next steps that need to be taken to God.

Sweet Katia was never found and we have been told to presume that she has past away. While our hearts grieve, we know that she is healthy, whole and in the presence of her loving Heavenly Father.

Over the last year in this journey in orphan ministry I have learned that my heart truly does not belong to me. The brokenness that God allowed us to feel for these children was not a brokenness that left us hopeless or defeated. It propelled us to pray, fast, act, seek, listen and speak on their behalf. It has had a radical effect on our entire church.

He has told you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you. But to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

Stewart Family Goes to Washington DC

Our Family has been asked to be one of two families representing the State of CO for National Adoption Month - Voice for Adoption.

Our picture will be on display in Washington DC for the month of November and then will go to Senator Udall's office for 2 months before it makes its way back to CO.

Voice for Adoption makes a book of profile pictures and a brief bio on each family that is featured. The below information was taken from an interview and will appear along with our picture in the book.

The Stewart Family

“Please assure that adoptive families have the needed tools and resources.”

“Our family is a beautiful blend of nationalities,” write Jeff and Kari Stewart, parents to three biological children (Jeremiah, age 30; Sarah, age 25; Hannah, age 24), and six adopted children (Elisabeth, 17, born in China; Abigail, 15, born in Korea; Logan, 13, born in Florida; Luke, 11, born in Haiti; Jillian, 10, born in Tennessee; and Zinnia, 8, born in Hong Kong). The children were each adopted at various ages between infancy and toddlerhood.

The Stewart family bustles with activity; the children are all active with music, sports, school, and clubs. A week in the Stewart household might include Elisabeth working on college applications, Abigail running in her cross country meets, Logan practicing his drums, Luke fundraising for a Haitian orphanage, Jill practicing new recipes in the kitchen, and Zinnia playing with her friends and listening to music.

When asked what motivated them to adopt, the Stewarts reply unequivocally, “God put that desire on our hearts.” The Stewarts enjoy putting their faith into action in the way they care for each of their children’s needs. In discussing the difficulties they have faced in raising adopted children, Jeff and Kari explain, “Most children who have been placed for adoption have experienced trauma. That trauma can bring challenging behaviors into the family. The hardest part early on was educating our friends and families on these challenges and how we needed support.” Their youngest, Zinnia, has Down Syndrome, and benefits from Kari and Jeff’s extensive parenting experience.

Kari and Jeff were grateful for the Adoption Tax Credit, which allowed them to pay off expenses for their expanding family. The Stewarts are able to enjoy each other’s company on a monthly “night out” thanks to the organization Kids At Heart/Fundango, which serves foster and adoptive families. Jeff and Kari have also taken advantage of adoption support groups, where they found encouragement for the challenges they faced as adoptive parents. Clearly, this family also has much wisdom to offer others who are on the adoption journey.

Kari and Jeff Stewart would like members of Congress to know how crucial that post-adoption support is for adoptive families. They urge Congress, “Please ensure that adoptive parents have the necessary tools, resources and respite to raise a healthy, whole family.”

Something is Wrong with Me

I adore all of the kids at Son of God. They are beautiful, precious and priceless children of God. Three boys there hold a special place in my heart. As soon as we arrived last Monday - Osnel, Ronjmmy and Wendy were by my side. Osnel and Ronjmmy are happy to receive any attention I give them and will just stand by me quietly. Wendy is more persistent and will grab my hand and insist that we make eye contact and talk.

Shortly after we arrived Wendy told us, "Something is wrong with me. I am getting smaller." He indicated by pulling on his clothes that everything was too big. What do you say to that? I was speechless. I gave him a big hug and told him that I loved him.

Due to the effects of malnutrition the kids are getting smaller. The food that we provide is sufficient, it is just being misappriopriated by those who care for the kids. For those of you who sponsor these kids financially I want to assure you that we are working hard at making contacts in Haiti that will hold the adults in this situation accountable in caring for the kids. I don't know what would happen to the kids if they weren't even getting a portion of the food that we provide.

Osnel is quiet. He will just stand by me and when I turn to him or put my arm around him, he looks up into my face with the most tender, genuine smile. Osnel has a terrible fungus that is all over his scalp. He had a deep sore that was on one of his ears that was filled with pus. The pus was oozing out of the sore, down his neck and onto his chest. I so wanted to take him somewhere and clean him up, put medicine on him and just hold him. I took his face in my hands and looked him in the eyes and told him how precious he was and how much I loved him. I didn't have an interpreter with me, but by the smile that lit up his face he seemed to understand what I was saying.

I have noticed the last couple of times that we have been to Haiti that Osnel and Ronjmmy are friends. They stand side by side - watching the activity that happens around them. Ronjmmy likes to stand by me and will lightly wrap him hand around my upper arm and then lay his face against my arm. He will smile shyly at me and then turn away when I smile back.

The power of touch is amazing! We all need to be touched by someone who loves us. The power of touch brings hope and healing. The power of touch commands loneliness to flee. The power of touch allows the body to relax. I am always amazed how the little ones beg to be picked up and how quickly they fall asleep on the shoulder of an adult who is holding them so lovingly and securely.

Jesus didn't have to touch people to heal them, but he did. Even the woman who risked touching the hem of Jesus' garment knew that there was power not only flowing through Jesus, but through touch (Matthew 9:19-22).

As we were getting ready to leave the orphanage Wendy grabbed our interpreter Samuel and brought him to me. His earnest, sincere eyes grabbed my attention, he said "I am little and I can't do much to help myself, but if you adopt me my life would be better". Tiffany and I could hardly control our emotions hearing those words come out of his mouth so seriously. I picked him up and hugged him tightly and told him how much I loved him and would be praying for him. Then he looked at me and said in english "God Bless You".

Those are sweet tender words that are forever etched on my heart.

There is a song that Sara Groves sings "I saw what I saw". It speaks the words that I feel about how the children at Son of God have touched my life. Their pain has changed me.

God has allowed us to feel a portion of how His heart grieves at the acts that are committed against His children. What should our response be?

God's mandate for those who follow him is that we are to "speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves". Proverbs 31:8

That act will look different for each of us. Here are some ways that you can speak up on behalf of these kids:
*PRAY
*FAST
*Share their story with anyone who will listen - you never know who in your spere of influence has deep enough ties to Haiti that could open the door to freedom for these kids.

DeAndre was born in Jan. 1996. He is in the 10th grade and is anxious to have a family to call his own. He is interested in playing the cello, mountain biking and cooking. If you would like more information about DeAndre please call The Adoption Exchange at 303-755-4756.

Some may look at DeAndre's picture and think he is almost grown and most of the parenting has already happened in his life. That is not the case. DeAndre needs someone that he can talk to when he is thinking about going to college, when he is thinking about buying a car, when he is thinking about getting married. Being a family doesn't end when they turn 18.

No matter how old we are - we all have days that we need to call home. :)

If you are in the place where God wants you, in spite of the challenges you encounter, you can trust him and rest assured that he will do what you cannot do on your own.

Last week some members of our Orphan Ministry team went to Haiti. Even though we were met with a heartbreaking scenario in Orphan Ministry, there were also amazing moments of KNOWING that we were smack dab in the middle of God's will, despite what we could physically see and feel.

This week I have been encouraged by Rich Dixon's blog posts, especially the one titled "Say Hello to the Hills". You can read Rich's blog at:

Rich's blog is not about adoption or orphan ministry. He writes about a dream that God placed in his heart and how, just now, it is being realized as he hand-cycles along the Mississippi. His blog will be an encouragement to anyone who has ever had a God-sized dream and has been totally dependent on God‘s guidance each step of the way.

Rich is encountering difficulties he didn't expect when God first gave him this vision of what he might do. But, he wouldn't want to be anywhere other than where is he is right now. In the post I mentioned, he writes about how his wife, Becky, was waiting for him at the top of a particularly steep hill. When he made it to the top, she said "How was it?" and his response was "It was tough!” Then he smiled and said, “And I’m really glad we’re here."

I can’t think of a better way to explain our experiences in Haiti than by using the words Rich used. It was really tough! But, we also witnessed God opening doors that had not been open before and this filled us with a sense of victory. We knew that God was present, that He knew what was going on, and that his will would be done.

Allowing God to be the master of our hearts is an incredible, humbling journey. It is not easy, comfortable or without challenge. While Becky was waiting for Rich to make it to the top of the hill, I am sure that she was praying that he would have the strength and endurance necessary for the challenge he was facing. While we were in Haiti, we knew that we had prayer warriors covering us from the moment we left DIA until we returned home. I have never been in a situation where I truly felt the covering of prayer like I did in Haiti and, for that matter, through the entire journey in Orphan Ministry. Thank you to all of you who prayed for us.

Allowing God to be the master of your heart and being smack dab in the middle of His will brings peace that cannot be found any other way.

When we commit a situation to prayer, it means we are relinquishing our desires and focusing on God's.

As you journey down the road of obedience to God’s call on your life, take time to rest in the fact that you are in the palm of His hand. Let Him perfect His will in you and in your present circumstances. :)

This Sunday, September 25th Allyson Joy, licensed dietician will be joining our Adoption/Foster Care Support Group to share ideas with us on how we can feed our families a healthier diet and stay within our budget. :)

Fall always throws our dinner time for a loop because not everyone is home at dinnertime. With kids gone for football and cross country until almost bedtime, we find ourselves eating later and a lot of the times not very healthy.

Timberline - Dress A Girl has been asked to provide 100 dresses to meet a goal of 600 dresses that will go to Uganda the end of October from Northern Colorado.

What if you don't sew or are not able to attend?

You can make dresses at home or donate the necessary supplies. There is a beautiful wooden, hinged box located near the Timberline Cafe' that you can put your donations in. Make sure you mark your donation specifically for Dress A Girl before you put it in the box.

Mary has assured me that you don't need any sewing skills to make the prayer dolls (pictured above). That is probably where I should start. :)

Aaron was born 8/2010 and Jaden was born 1/2009.

A note from their caseworker:

These two little ones are waiting for their forever family! Jaden, a ball of energy, enjoys exploring his world. Playing in the dirt, with his trucks or with his dinosaurs, is special to him. Not only does he like getting dirty, he can also be found picking out his own clothes. Yogurt and peanut butter are his favorite foods. Jaden benefits from counseling and speech therapy, which may need to continue after placement. He is a bright guy. With a smile on his little face, Aaron observes his world. He is a big fan of being held and cuddled. Get ready for a calm and happy baby; he likes to babble and maintains good eye contact. Aaron participates in physical therapy. The caseworker prefers a U.S. family because of agency cost restrictions. She would like for the boys to be the only children in the home or the youngest. We only accept inquires on the sibling pair, who will need to be placed together. Financial assistance may be available for adoption-related services. For Colorado children, both homestudied and non-homestudied Colorado families are encouraged to inquire; only homestudied families from other states should do so.

The Heart of Anger - written by Lou Priolo

I would like you to consider being part of a new study in September by our Adoption and Foster Care Ministry Leaders of the book The Heart of Anger by Lou Priolo.

This book gives families some tools for success in dealing with the anger issues that trouble some of our children. Even though God has called us to adopt and nurture these precious children, when faced with their outbursts of anger, we often find ourselves reacting the same way they do -- with anger.

The author offers ideas on how parents can help their children recognize what triggers their angry responses and then suggests how, as parents, they can respond in ways that brings healing instead of more anger.

What triggers anger?

For our kids it could be:
* Lack of control
* Resistance to allowing someone to get close
* Fear of being rejected once again

For us, as parents, it could be:
* Our kid's reaction
* Our kids' anger
* Disappointment in ourselves for not handling the situation like we should have
* Fear that we have allowed God to lead us down a path that is bigger than what we feel we can personally handle.

What better people could we talk to about these challenges than those who have been in similar situations or are currently experiencing the same things we are?

It is such a relief to be able to connect with other families who are on this journey of foster care and adoption. They understand the challenges that you face and are willing to support you through them.

Welcome Child Adoption and Foster Care Ministry Leaders have been busy this summer planning the next several months of our adoption/foster care support groups. - The 2nd and 4th Sunday evening from 5-7 of each month is reserved just for you. One of those evening will be a time to have guest speakers and the other to set aside time to do a study together. A Backpack of My Own - Sweet Success!! :)

Thank you Timberline Church!

Our 3rd annual "A Backpack of My Own" was a great success!!

Our Welcome Child Ministry team delivered 236 filled backpacks, 83 flash drives and 67 scientific calculators to Foster and Adoptive Families of Larimer County!!!

One of the board members asked me to convey a huge "Thank you" to you our church family for meeting this need for them. The families that they serve were so appreciative and blessed by your love and thoughtfulness in filling these backpacks. The personal notes were encouraging, not only to the kids who received them, but to the families who care for them as well.

Many times foster and adoptive families feel isolated in the journey that they are on. These filled backpacks helped them to know that someone cares about them and what God has called them to do.

Thank you to all of you who filled a backpack, your loving response to this need will touch the life of a child through-out the entire school year!! :)

Project 1.27

Project 1.27 is based on the verse in the New Testament book of James, Chapter 1, verse 27 which states; “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widow in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

The vision of Project 1.27 is “No waiting children in Colorado by 2014”. We would like to see the day when there are more parents waiting to adopt children than children waiting to be adopted.

The ministry is designed to act as a connecting bridge between parents in local churches wanting to adopt and foster children and the county government departments of human services. We assist Christian parents with navigating the process of Colorado’s Child Welfare System. We provide the training required to be a certified adoptive/foster parent and assist with the related paperwork. Additionally, we explain to parents how the process works and the laws that govern the process of bringing children into their homes.

Several times a year, Project 1.27 offers a free parent orientation, which is an informational meeting for parents wanting to know more about adopting and fostering in Colorado. We encourage interested families to bring family members and friends to join them to hear about the process, challenges and rewards of bringing children into their homes. Our next Orientation will be September 13^th, 2011 at Grace Chapel, 8508 S. Valley Hwy, Englewood, CO from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Interested parents can register for this event online through the Project 1.27 website (www.project127.com).

Since it’s inception in 2005, Project 1.27 has been able to secure forever families for 172 children in Colorado with more than 60 other children in the process of finalizing their adoption. We also are looking for Christian parents willing to be foster parents, willing to serve children that need temporary care while issues are worked out with the children’s parents.

We have also played a key role in training church leaders about the needs of children in foster care and how to appropriately support the parents that reach for them. The support that parents receive from their local church plays an important part of that family’s adoptive or fostering success.

Project 1.27 is a non-profit ministry that depends on the donations from the body of Christ to provide these services for Christian families. If you are not called to bring children into your home, you still have a call to “look after orphans”. Maybe your way to care is to support a family that is adopting or fostering or to financially support Project 1.27 in its mission to empty the foster care system in Colorado of adoptable children.

Haiti - One year ago today

One year ago today Pastor Reza, Sean and Tiffany Cherry and I visited Son of God Orphanage for the first time.

We were overwhelmed with the love that filled us completely for these kids. A love that only come from God. A love that would keep us pressing in for His Glory for each and every one of these kids.

Since our initial trip to Haiti last August, we have had 3 teams go to Son of God.

Those three teams have made an impact in the lives of these children. They brought hope, they brought medicine, they brought fun, they brought sunshine on a cloudy day, but most of all they brought hope and love that can only come from one source - Jesus Christ.

Timberline Church you have made an impact in the lives of these children. When our teams stood before you during the weekend service before we left - your hearts joined in prayer for each person that was taking a step of faith in serving the least of these. As God brought the team to your mind over the following week, you prayed. You have committed to sponsoring the children spiritually and financially. Through your financial support we have been providing food and water for the kids. It is hard to measure the results that your prayer support has provided for these kids. I know by visiting with some of our sponsors that their experience in sponsoring a child financially and spiritually has expanded their heart beyond their home, beyond their neighborhood to another country, to a child that feel connected to. That heart connection that they talk about can only come from the Holy Spirit. God knits our hearts together in a powerful way when we walk in obedience.

Today we find our hearts are committed to advocating for these kids in whatever way God opens the door to.

Prayer and fasting are the most powerful and effective tool we have in standing in the gap for these kids.

When God calls you to go near the things that break His heart your life will never be the same!

While we have faced more challenges that we thought possible with our first Orphan Ministry partnership, we have found that God is present, God is near and God is faithful!

God came to set the captive free and He is calling the body of Christ to put themselves in position to be a witness - to be a voice - to be an intercessor - and to respond and act as He leads.

What does God require of us, His children in this situation?

Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you, But to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Timberline Church is filling backpacks!!!!

A few guidelines regarding adoption requirements in Haiti:

Haiti does not allow single men to adopt.
Haiti does allow single women to adopt.
Haiti has a minimum age limit for parents. Couples must be at least 35 years of age unless there is documented infertility.
Haiti requires that couples be together at least 7 to 10 years.
Haiti will allow families with up to 2 biological children to adopt with a Presidential dispensation. (special approval) - If your family size exceeds the number of children allowed, you can submit a request for Presidential approval. Agencies are seeing larger families approved to adopt.
One or two parents may be required to travel to submit adoption paperwork and finalize the adoption
The average adoption process in Haiti is approx. 2 years from the start of your homestudy until your child comes home.

Smart and sensitive, this preteen is very caring and helpful with Dacoda, her little brother's needs. In the fifth grade, Rose thinks things through and takes time to consider others. She benefits from physical, speech and occupational therapies. George, like his sister, is also bright and sensitive. Reading, football, cars and playing outside are his interests. When it comes to food, he'll eat anything and everything - in large quantities! This wonderful fourth grader wants to be part of a loving family and would thrive on activities that encourage sportsmanship and teamwork. Youngest child Dacoda is a happy, smiling people-lover who likes to be around others. He is interested in SpongeBob, cars and Power Rangers. Fun and charming, this kindergartener gets along well with both adults and kids. He is good at engaging others and likes to be moving, especially outside. Dacoda utilizes a wheelchair and walkers for his cerebral palsy and is really motivated to be mobile! He has made amazing progress and continues to improve weekly. He benefits from physical, speech and occupational therapies and will soon be in a regular classroom. Talkative and busy, he charms everyone he meets. Dacoda may not be able to live independently as an adult, but he can have a wonderful life! The caseworker prefers a family who speaks both English and Spanish; however, all family types will be considered. George needs a strong male role model and a patient, nurturing home. Rose would do well with a caring mother figure. She says she would like to have additional siblings to play with! Financial assistance may be available for adoption-related services.

"You can have whatever You want from me, but please, God, just show me what difference one person can make in the darkness of this broken world." (Taken from the conclusion of Chapter 1)

When you purchase a book, do you ever jump to conclusions about what the story will be or how it will end, even before you start reading the book? I do! At Orphan Summit this year, I purchased the book Passport Through Darkness. I knew the book was about trafficking and a woman who dared to defy the odds of stepping into this battleground in Sudan. What I didn't know is that the book is about so much more than the author and her husband's obedient response to God's call. It is about realizing and then seeking the dream God has for you.

I did find some stories that I assumed would be shared -- and how heartbreaking it was to read them. But, God is NOT calling us to look away -- to ignore and pretend that these things aren't happening. Sure, it is hard and it is painful to put ourselves physically and emotionally in the midst of any type of suffering. But, God is calling us to do just that. He wants us to be a witness, a voice for those who need someone to stand up and speak out for them.

What surprised me about this book -- as you will find out for yourself when you read it -- is that Passport Through Darkness is not only about the stories of those Smith encountered on this journey, but her own personal journey through darkness. She is real in sharing her feelings, insecurities and obstacles in following God's call. Among them are the challenges she and her husband, Milton, faced in their marriage, as they balanced the call God had given both of them.

Even though many of us might not be travelling around the world to be God's Hands and Feet to the lost, lonely and forgotten, the things that God calls us to be obedient in can seem bigger than our abilities. That means we are in the right place!! While it is more comfortable to be in a position where our abilities line up with the task. God calls us to depend on Him in the areas that our abilities, strength and faith don't match with the task. He will equip us in the moment or He will provide someone to come alongside us to complete the task for His Glory!

A quote from this book that I really like:

"This Kingdom living is painstaking work. We live it at times halfheartedly, other times with gusto, often with great joy and awe at the thrill of being used in something, anything, so far beyond ourselves we know it's God sized. Almost always a dreadful fear hovers around, wanting to bear down on us, and more than a sprig of doubt pushes up like weeds through a sidewalk. Our only prayer in those times is "Lord, we believe. Help us in our unbelief."

Reading this book challenged, encouraged and inspired by reading this book. As I read, the binding of the book began coming apart; it is now in three pieces. Someone suggested that I return the book and get a new one. But, when I read books, I highlight things that I want to go back and reread and I write notes in the sidebar. I can't take this book back and exchange it for another one, it represents this journey that God has me on, and is more precious to me in 3 pieces than if it was all together as it should be. This broken book reminds me that God uses the broken pieces of our lives to be an extension of Him right where we are, if we allow Him to work His perfect will in our lives.

The song "Strong Enough" by Matthew West goes right along with the theme of depending on God to be strong in the areas that He has placed you. As you listen to this song, give God the situations in your life that you don't feel strong enough -- where you feel your abilities don't meet the task -- and then remember this truth found in

Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Happy Fathers Day to all of you Dads!!

Fathers play a role in a child's life that no one else can play. I am grateful for my dad. I am grateful for the truths he spoke into my life, with his words and his actions. He was my dad and my pastor - a difficult combination at times. On Aug. 1, 1987 he passed away suddenly. I was 23 years old and Hannah, our youngest daughter at the time, was 6 weeks from turning 1 year old. I really struggled with feeling angry at God for taking my dad when he was so young. I still needed my dad. I still needed to ask him advice. I still needed a hug that only a dad can give. I actually wanted to listen to his sermons now. :) In his sermons I learned more about him, about the things he held close to his heart and about the things he was passionate about.

In our daily life he modeled compassion in action. He always had time to stop and offer a word of encouragement to anyone, whether he knew them or not. One day when we were shopping, he asked my two sisters and me to wait for him at the door. We saw him walk over to an older woman and say something to her. Her face lite up as my dad spoke to her. When he came back I asked him "What did you say to her?" He said that he felt like God wanted him to

remind her that "God loved her and would never leave her". I will never forget that visual picture of obedience that my dad displayed. It is a reminder to me that we never know what is going on in someone's life. Be obedient in a simple act of offering a word of encouragement, it truly could change their life.

My dad was passionate about missions. Even pastoring small churches with small budgets, a portion of the money always went to international missions. He loved having missionaries come to our church and stay in our home. He never went on a missions trip or traveled internationally, but he believed that God had called the church to spread the gospel to every tribe and every nation.

While I struggled with anger at God for taking my dad young, I learned that God could handle my anger. He turned that anger into action in my life!

Dad's - God has given you the opportunity to speak into the lives of your children in ways that will remain for eternity. Your testimony, your passions and your actions will continue to lead your children in God's will for their lives.

SUMMERTIME!!!!

I am always happy for the change in routine that summer brings. The break from homework, parent portal messenger, early alarm clocks and packing lunches.

Summer break brings as many challenges for me as it does for the kids. It takes us 2-3 weeks to work into a routine and, getting everyone's expectations of what "their" summer is going to look like worked out.

The summer chore list still remains to be posted (that is my job) and I have slacked off on getting that done. Then we try to sit down as a family and have everyone name one thing that they would like to do as a family during summer break. The guidelines we give on this is that it has to be something we can do close to home, inexpensive and that it can be done in less than 4 hours.

Summer can be exhausting keeping everyone busy, productive and relatively peaceful with each other. I know the weight that we as mom's carry in making sure that everyone gets to do the things they want to do. I want to remind you to do things that you like to do. Stay connected with your friends during the summer. Meet at the park for a picnic. Find a teenager that you can pay a few bucks to hang out with your kids while you meet a friend for lunch (enjoying a perfect glass of ice tea - my personal favorite!).

Enjoy each day and ask God to fill your heart and home with His unfailing love and grace. :)

Guatemala

Last month we went to visit an orphanage in Guatemala City. From the moment you walk through the front doors of Jesucristo es mi Casa you feel the love of God flowing through every room. To me it felt more like walking into a home of a large family. The kids and staff knew that we were coming and were ready to sing some songs of welcome to us, along with a lot of hugs and kisses on the cheeks.

Pastor Araceli is the director/founder of this orphanage. She said that God spoke to her heart that she needed to do something to help another orphanage that was full to capacity, which led her to open Jesucristo es mi Casa. She quickly began receiving referrals of children from the local police and children services dept. These kids need love and healing that can only come through the power and love of Jesus Christ.

Pastor Araceli is also a pastor of a vibrant, caring church in the community. They have a community center that serves a free lunch to anyone that comes through the doors. Daily you will see infants - through seniors come to be fed and ministered to. They know that they can not only count on a good meal (for some their only meal of the day), but they know that they will sing praise songs and hear the word of God. This meal time happens during a lunch break for the kids in school, so parents are able to bring their kids to eat before or after they attend school (kids either attend school in the morning or afternoon in the public schools in Guatemala City).

This community center also has a clinic. The doctor that has been seeing members in the community is now sick and is not able to help. Please join us in praying that Pastor Araceli is able to connect with a local physician who can come to the community center a couple times a week.

The kids all received new dresses for the girls and shorts and t-shirts for the boys from Dress a Girl. Dress a Girl is a new ministry that has recently started at Timberline Church. As you can tell they are very proud of their new clothes. http://www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com/

We feel honored at Timberline Church to come alongside Pastor Araceli as she has stepped out in obedience to love and care for these precious children. :)

Foster Parents are Heroes :)

As National Foster Care Month comes to an end, I have been reflecting on how grateful I am to the families in our community who are dedicated, loving parents to children in crisis. They are the unsung heroes of our community. They would not see themselves as heroes; in fact they would prefer to remain in the background in quiet service.

A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to go to court with one of our foster families. The courtroom was full of people who thought they knew what was best for the child in care, even to the point of discrediting the abilities of the foster family. The foster family responded with quiet confidence and advocated with an authority that could only come from those who were walking in obedience to God and seeking Him for the best interest of the child.

I asked foster parents for the following suggestions of how you could support and encourage them:

*Help with house cleaning (professional or not) - Just to have someone come run a vacuum and dust the furniture could be a huge blessing.

*Lend your handyman services - Repairing simple things in their home that have been broken.

*Take the foster family's biological kids with you for some fun time. The first few days and weeks that a child comes into care can be stressful on the entire family.

*PRAY!! The children who come to foster parents are bearing things that children should never have to see/experience. They need our prayers for healing/wholeness and the foster parents need prayers for how to deal with the bio-parents, case managers, and in court processes.

*Offer to bring over a meal for the family, when a new child come into their home.

*Pray for the birth families.

*Drop by the foster parents' home with their favorite snack/candy bar, beverage, when they are have an especially tough day -- to give them a little encouragement

*Consider becoming a CASA to advocate for the children in the foster care

*Respect the child's story as just that...the CHILD'S story. Do not pry for information about why they are in care or details of their case. Foster parents are limited in what they can share.

*Send an encouraging note/phone call/email to let the foster parents know you care, when a child leaves their home.

*Consider becoming a respite provider for foster families.

*Take a foster child who has aged-out of the system under your wing. Invite them over for dinner, take interest in their lives and show them support and genuine care.

I am praying for those of you whose heart may be stirred to become a foster parents. You could bring hope and healing into a child's life. For more information about becoming a foster parent, contact your local county Children's Services Dept.

This sibling trio will capture your heart. First in line is Talia the soft spoken older sister. This endearing lass draws others to her. Reading, coloring and playing with dolls is where she finds joy. As a friend of animals, this sweet gal loves all critters. Listening to music while playing dress-up is the best activity. In the second grade Talia does very well. With her pleasant personality she is well liked by her teachers and peers. She currently benefits from counseling, which will need to continue after placement. Here comes Aiden, the sweet and loving middle child. Very active, this fellow enjoys playing with animals and his toy cars. With his mellow demeanor this kiddo helps out wherever he is. Though shy at first, Aiden opens up and is very friendly; he gets along well with other children. He is not in school yet. Little Zachary is sweet and even-tempered. Even though he has asthma, he doesn't let it keep him from being active and climbing. Building tools or playing with blocks are on the top of his list. This tyke loves animals, but is allergic to most. Very helpful, delightful Zachary has fun with other children and gets along with adults too. He is allergic to peanuts, eggs and powder cheese, but this doesn't hinder his growing love of food. These children would like to maintain contact with their grandmother. Their caseworker prefers a two-parent family; however, all family types will be considered. Financial assistance may be available for adoption-related services. We only accept inquiries on the entire sibling group, who will be placed together. For Colorado children, both homestudied and non-homestudied Colorado families are encouraged to inquire; only homestudied families from other states should do so.

May is Foster Care Month

Today I had the awesome opportunity to spend a portion of my day honoring six phenomenal foster parents from across the state. Our very own Governor Hickenlooper and the Colorado Department of Human Services Executive Director Reggie Bicha hosted the first ever lunch appreciation for Foster Care Month. I must say, I've been at the state for over 26 years and this is the first time I've had a governor's office and the executive director reach out in this manner to honor those who give and give and give of themselves. These families came with their foster children of all ages to receive our appreciation for the wonderful job that they do.

We were there to say "Thank You". One foster parent said, "I get my 'thank you' every day by seeing the little differences in the children in my home." I know that the families present at today's event are a sample of the wonderful individuals all over the state that step up to make the difference not only in a child's life but in the lives of their families. Many of the stories shared how these families had worked with the birth parents to support their journey of regaining custody of their children. As Executive Director Bicha shared information about each family a recurring themes of serving, caring, sacrifice and commitment. I was most impressed to see that two of the six foster families served adolescents.

As I sat in the back of the room I thought about the children/youth coming into foster care for the first time and wondered who would be there for them? As though I spoke my thoughts out loud, I heard Executive Director Bicha's parting comments to the foster families ... it was a plea for help. He shared that CO needs more foster homes like yours. He asked each family to share with their families, neighbors, faith community and with whosoever would listen about our need for more good foster homes. Colorado's 64 county departments of human/social services work to help prevent child abuse and neglect by supporting families and providing needed services to them when they are in need. When services aren't sufficient children/youth come into foster care.

Today was Mother's and Father' Day wrapped into one. These foster families were appreciated by us but more importantly by the children/youth they poured themselves into as they clapped and gave hugs to each of the recipients. Their efforts aren't being wasted. Consider becoming a foster mother. You can join the ranks of women and men all over the state who dared to make a difference in the life of another person's child.

Thank you Dr. Sharen Ford for sharing this with us today. Your words always encourage me to continue to press on in the area of advocating for new foster families and supporting the foster families in our community.

There are so many things that I love about Easter. I love the tulips that are blooming in our yard, each one a masterpiece. I love the perfect little grape hyacinths that dot the ground with new life, ever so delicately, even in the rocks. A wonderful reminder to me that even in the rocky places of my life that God can spring up beautiful things in unexpected places.

There is a line that speaks to my heart in Matt Maher's song "Christ is Risen" -

This is a great time for us to connect with you and share what is happening in Welcome Child ministry here in our church, in community and around the world.

You will be hearing from our ministry leaders individually and from Nick and Kelly Mortellite about their Orphan Ministry Trip to Ethiopia where they spent 1 month serving children at an orphanage.

I am grateful to all of you who are now and for those of you who in the future will be a voice for those who have no voice. God continues to open doors of ministry because of your faithfulness and obedience to serve.

Timberline Church living out "Let Love Live" in Haiti!!

What impact could a couple of short term missions trips have in the lives of the children at Son of God Orphanage in Carrefour, Haiti? A big difference!!! Watch the videos listed below and you will see a physical and spiritual change in the children's faces.

The Medical Team was the first to arrive. Most of the children were sick with fevers, coughs and scabies. Each child was given a physical exam and the necessary medicine they needed to help them feel better. By the time the second team arrived fully dedicating their time to loving on the kids and sharing the love of Jesus through songs, crafts and an amazing field trip (Thank you Brooks!) outside the city the medicine had begun to heal their bodies.

Although the medicine helped the kids physically, I believe more than anything, those in our two teams who held them close and told them how much Jesus loved them and we loved them had an even bigger impact. You can see it on their faces!

We are committed to returning to Carrefour, Haiti to be a consistent presence in these children's lives. A team is scheduled to travel there in June and we will possibly take two other trips again this fall. Parenting and Adoption

When we started on our first adoption journey18 years ago, I remember someone asking me "Are you going to parent your adopted children the same way that you have parented your birth children?"

I thought this was a ridiculous question. My response was "of course, we will". At the time Jeff and I had 3 children in the 1st grade to 7th grade. We felt confident in our relationship with each other and confident in our ability to parent.

Little did I know that God was going to need to change so many things about "me" from the inside-out. Parenting children who have been hurt does require you to parent differently. It requires you to daily step back and see things from their point of view - from their hurt, from their anger, from their fear.

It made me depend on God in a way that I never had before. My skills were no longer good enough. My past experiences and successes didn't carry over into this new challenge in my life. I needed (and still do!!!) God to so fill my heart and mind that my responses and reactions did not mirror the undisciplined behavior my children were displaying.

Earlier this week an email came to me through Empowered to Connect titled "I used to be a good mom". As I read the article I could really empathize with this mom and her words that came from a deep, reflective place in her heart. I remember saying the same thing about myself: "I used to be a good mom". Here is the link to that article.

If you are in the process of being remade as a parent. I know that it is tough. I also know that the journey is amazing and can even be joyful. Allow God to have his perfect will in your life and to walk you through the places you need to go to be a better parent to the kids that He has entrusted to you.

I would encourage you to read the entire first chapter of James, and want to point out verses 2-4 here:

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Jason Gray's song, "I am New" speaks to God's transforming power and love in our lives and His desire for us to be more like Him. Whether you are just beginning your journey with God or have known God for years and He is pressing into your heart and mind an area that needs to change and to be made more like Him - let the truth of these words wash over your heart and believethat during this season:

- You are chosen

-You are holy

-You are dearly loved!! :)

Orphan Summit VII May 12-14

Orphan Summit is a great place to connect with others who are passionate about advocating for children in need in your community and around the world.

If you are a pastor, ministry leader, lay leader, adoptive parent or are just seeking information on how you can get involved - this event is for you!
God will use each general session, each break-out session and each conversation that you have with people you have never met before to confirm His will for you in Orphan Ministry.
You will be encouraged, equipped and motivated to press on in the areas of Orphan Ministry where God is nudging you to serve.
In all of the general and break-out sessions, you will receive take home information. There will also be opportunities to meet face to face with representatives of local and global ministries and organizations who are hosting table in the exhibit area.
It is good to come together as the body of Christ in this larger setting, so that we can be better equipped to go back to our church homes and communities to walk out in faith and obedience what God has put on our hearts. :)
